crawl access

Permission for a search bot to fetch a page’s content for indexing or previewing.

Crawl access is the permission a website gives to a search bot or other automated agent to fetch page content. It is usually controlled with robots.txt, robots meta tags, authentication gates, and server-side policy. In practice, crawl access determines whether a crawler may request a URL, follow links, and collect text for indexing, previews, or summaries.

In cyber security, crawl access matters because it can reduce exposure or create it. Too much access can let scrapers harvest public data at scale, map site structure, or pull sensitive metadata that should not be widely distributed. Too little access can block legitimate search indexing or break monitoring tools. Defenders use precise crawl rules, rate limiting, and logs to spot abusive bots, while attackers often disguise scrapers as normal crawlers to evade controls. Managing crawl access is therefore part of both information governance and perimeter defense.
