Counterterrorism is the set of security operations used to prevent, disrupt, and respond to terrorist activity. It combines intelligence work, police action, military support, border control, and digital monitoring. In modern conflict, that last part matters: extremists and hostile groups often plan, recruit, fundraise, and spread propaganda online, so counterterrorism now includes cyber defense as well as physical protection.
In cyber security, counterterrorism helps defenders detect suspicious communications, stop malware or phishing campaigns used to support attacks, and protect critical infrastructure from sabotage. It also appears in incident response when agencies trace command-and-control servers, monitor encrypted channels, or remove extremist content that coordinates violence. The goal is not only to stop one attack, but to break the wider network of planning, logistics, and influence that makes repeated attacks possible.
