Corrosion

Chemical damage that can weaken contacts, connectors, and conductive traces in electronics.

Corrosion is chemical or electrochemical damage that slowly breaks down metal in electronics. It often affects battery contacts, connectors, pins, shields, and conductive traces, making electrical paths noisy, intermittent, or completely open. Unlike a sudden break, corrosion can create flaky failures that appear and disappear, which makes diagnosis harder.

In cyber security, corrosion matters because damaged hardware can undermine trusted computing. A corroded contact may cause device instability, failed authentication tokens, unreliable storage, or spoofed faults that hide deeper tampering. Attackers may exploit neglected equipment by using physical degradation to weaken locks, sensors, or embedded devices, while defenders look for corrosion during inspections, maintenance, and incident response. Cleaning, continuity testing, and replacing compromised parts help restore reliable operation before the hardware is reused in a secure environment.
