Conversion process

The series of steps used to change one material into another product.

A conversion process is the sequence of steps used to change one input into another output. In chemistry and manufacturing, that may mean turning a raw material into a different product through heating, mixing, catalysis, or separation. In computing, the same idea applies when data is transformed from one format, encoding, or representation into another.

This matters in cyber security because attackers often rely on conversion steps to reshape content so it can be delivered, hidden, or executed. Examples include encoding payloads, converting file types, or normalizing text so malicious data slips past basic filters. Defenders study conversion processes to spot suspicious transformations, verify file integrity, and make sure parsers, sandboxes, and content filters see the same data an application will see. Understanding the full chain helps reveal where abuse can occur.
