Controller layout is the physical arrangement of buttons, sticks, triggers, and touch surfaces on a gaming device. It defines how a user reaches each control, how inputs are grouped, and how easy it is to make deliberate or accidental actions.
In cyber security, layout matters because human input is part of the trust boundary. A cramped or unfamiliar layout can cause misfires, unintended purchases, or mistakes when a device is used for login prompts, remote administration, or other sensitive tasks. Attackers may abuse this with look-alike controllers, malicious accessories, or remapping software that silently changes what each button does. Defenders reduce that risk with consistent mappings, signed firmware, clear prompts, and layout designs that make it obvious when a control has been altered.
