Control channel

The part of a protocol used for commands and session handling rather than file content.

A control channel is the part of a protocol used to carry commands, status messages, and session management, rather than the actual file or data content. In FTP, for example, the control channel handles greetings, login, and commands, while a separate data channel may carry file transfers.

Control channels matter in cyber security because attackers can hide instructions in traffic that looks routine and trustworthy. A malicious banner, command sequence, or session message may trigger malware, change behavior, or guide a remote access trojan without touching the main payload. Defenders therefore inspect control-plane traffic as carefully as data transfers, using network protocol analysis, endpoint telemetry, and logging to spot unusual commands, odd session state changes, or unexpected protocol use. If only file content is monitored, the real signal may be missed.
