Contract research organization

a company that supports research and development work for clients.

A contract research organization (CRO) is a company that performs research and development services for other organizations. CROs may support drug discovery, clinical trials, laboratory testing, engineering analysis, or other specialized R&D work under contract. Because they handle client-owned intellectual property, experimental results, regulatory records, and other sensitive data, CROs are attractive targets for cyber criminals.

In attacks, threat actors may try to steal research files, disrupt lab or project workflows, or lock systems with ransomware to pressure a victim into paying. Even limited access can be damaging if it affects time-sensitive studies or confidential formulas. Defenses usually focus on strong identity controls, network segmentation, encryption, least-privilege access, logging, and tested backups. For a CRO, protecting the data path is as important as protecting servers, because compromise can expose both business secrets and the work of multiple clients.
