Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

A system that tracks glucose levels over time using a body-worn sensor.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring, or CGM, is a medical system that measures glucose levels over time with a body-worn sensor. A CGM device usually samples fluid under the skin at regular intervals and sends readings to a receiver, phone, or insulin-related app. Unlike a single finger-stick test, CGM shows trends, spikes, and drops, which helps patients and clinicians make faster decisions.

In cyber security, CGM matters because it is a connected medical workflow, not just a sensor. Data may move through Bluetooth, mobile apps, cloud services, and clinician portals, creating opportunities for tampering, spoofed readings, account compromise, or privacy leakage. An attacker who alters glucose data may not cause a classic breach, but can still mislead treatment decisions or trigger unsafe alerts. Defenses include encrypted communication, secure device pairing, signed updates, access control, integrity checks, and monitoring for abnormal sensor or app behavior.
