Continuing development units

Ongoing learning credits used to keep some certifications active.

Continuing development units are credits earned through approved learning activities, such as courses, webinars, conferences, labs, teaching, or professional writing. Certification bodies use them to measure ongoing education after an exam has been passed. In some programs they are also called continuing education credits or professional development units.

In cyber security, continuing development units matter because threats, tools, and best practices change quickly. A certificate may prove that someone once met a standard, but CDUs help show that the holder is still keeping skills current. Security teams often track them for renewal of certifications in areas like incident response, governance, audit, and cloud security. In practice, attackers do not care about certificates, but defenders and employers do: CDUs are one way to verify that analysts and engineers continue learning about new attack methods, defenses, and compliance requirements.
