Contextual enforcement

A control approach that evaluates content, labels, and surrounding context instead of relying only on identity.

Contextual enforcement is a security control model that decides whether data can be used by looking at the content itself, its labels, and the surrounding situation, not just the user or service identity. It can examine metadata, sensitivity tags, entity names, document source, destination, and the request context before allowing an action.

This matters because identity checks alone often fail in modern cloud and AI workflows. A user may be allowed to open a file, but an AI assistant, connector, or downstream service may still not be allowed to reuse that content in a prompt, summary, or export. In defense, contextual enforcement helps block sensitive data from reaching chatbots, agents, or third-party tools at retrieval time. In attacks, adversaries often try to abuse valid credentials or trusted integrations; context-aware policies reduce the chance that legitimate access turns into unsafe data reuse.
