Conservation

The long-term preservation of a record so it remains available when needed.

Conservation is the long-term preservation of a record so it remains available, readable, and trustworthy when needed. In cyber security and digital governance, this means more than simply receiving a file: the record must be stored in a controlled way, with integrity, metadata, and retrieval preserved over time.

This matters because a system can confirm delivery while still failing retention. If archiving, indexing, format preservation, or access controls are missing, an organization may lose evidence, compliance proof, or operational history even though the document once passed through its platform. In practice, conservation appears in records management, invoice retention, logging, and incident evidence handling. Security teams care about it because preserved records support audits, investigations, legal obligations, and recovery, while weak conservation creates blind spots that attackers, disputes, or regulators can exploit.
