Confidentiality boundary

The security line that separates protected data from people or systems that should not see it.

A confidentiality boundary is the line that separates data meant to stay private from users, systems, or services that are not authorised to see it. In practice, it is enforced by access control, authentication, encryption, segmentation, and careful application design. When that boundary holds, customer records, credentials, and internal logs remain visible only to approved roles and processes.

This matters because many cyber attacks succeed by crossing that line rather than by breaking every system at once. Compromised credentials, exposed portals, insecure APIs, or overly broad permissions can turn a limited foothold into readable or exportable data. Once personal or billing information is disclosed, attackers may use it for phishing, account takeover, fraud, or social engineering. Defenders protect confidentiality boundaries by applying least privilege, monitoring unusual access, restricting data exports, and reviewing which systems can reach sensitive datasets. In a utility environment, even non-financial records can be enough to enable convincing scams, so preserving the boundary is a core part of incident prevention and response.
