Conditional clause

A term that applies only if specific conditions are met.

A conditional clause is a rule or requirement that only takes effect when specific conditions are true. In security and compliance documents, it can define when an obligation starts, when an exception applies, or when a control must be enforced. For example, a platform may have to apply extra age checks only if an account shows signs of being used by a minor.

This matters in cyber security because attackers and defenders both rely on conditions. Malicious code may activate only if it detects a target system, a region, or a user action, while defensive controls may trigger only when risk thresholds are met. In governance, conditional clauses turn broad promises into enforceable logic, but they also create ambiguity if the conditions are vague or hard to verify. Clear wording, logging, and testable controls help ensure the clause can be audited and actually enforced.
