A computational model is a mathematical or algorithmic representation of a real system. It simplifies complex behavior into rules, variables, and outputs that can be simulated and analyzed. In cyber security, models are used to describe networks, users, malware behavior, or the spread of failure across connected systems.
These models matter because security decisions often depend on predictions: how an attack may move, which control will block it, or how a system will behave under stress. Defenders use computational models for threat modeling, anomaly detection, and digital twin simulations. Attackers can also use them to test exploit paths, tune phishing campaigns, or identify the weakest point in a defense. Their value depends on accurate inputs and sound assumptions; if data is incomplete, poisoned, or outdated, the model can produce confident but wrong results. In sensitive environments such as medicine, that can affect safety as well as security.
