Compliance documentation is the set of records, logs, approvals, test results, and policy mappings that show a system follows legal, regulatory, or internal requirements. In cyber security, it proves that controls such as access management, encryption, logging, data retention, and incident response are not just designed, but actually in place and operating as intended.
This matters because many attacks exploit weak governance as much as weak code. A system may be technically functional but still be unusable if it cannot meet audit, privacy, or data-residency rules. Defenders use compliance documentation to support risk reviews, vendor assessments, and security audits, while attackers may target gaps where controls are claimed but not evidenced. Good documentation also helps teams verify that a model, cloud workload, or application can be deployed safely in production and defended after an incident.
