Comparative mapping

Side-by-side analysis used to examine similarities and differences.

Comparative mapping is a side-by-side analysis method used to line up two or more systems, datasets, or behaviors and identify what is shared, what is different, and what changed. In cyber security, it helps analysts compare malware samples, attack chains, network topologies, endpoint artifacts, or configuration states so they can spot patterns that are not obvious in a single view.

This matters because many threats are variations of a known technique rather than completely new tools. Comparative mapping can reveal shared code paths, reused infrastructure, privilege-escalation steps, or mismatched controls across environments. Defenders use it to validate detections, compare baseline and compromised systems, and measure whether hardening reduces attack surface. Attackers can also use similar comparisons to test which environments are easier to exploit. The value of the method depends on careful normalization and validation, since misleading comparisons can hide important differences.
