Comparative claim

A statement that contrasts one product, service, or company with another.

A comparative claim is a statement that directly contrasts one product, service, or company with another, such as saying one is faster, safer, cheaper, or more sustainable. In regulated communications, the claim must be specific and supportable, because vague comparisons can mislead buyers and invite legal or reputational risk.

In cyber security, comparative claims matter because they are often used in vendor marketing, procurement reviews, and incident-response messaging. A supplier may claim its tool detects more threats than a competitor, or a scammer may imitate trusted brands by making false comparisons to appear superior. Defenders should treat these statements as evidence-backed assertions, not slogans: check the test method, the baseline, and whether the comparison is fair. Clear documentation helps prevent deceptive marketing, supports audits, and reduces the chance that an attacker can exploit exaggerated claims to gain trust.
