A Community Edition is a free product tier offered by a vendor, usually with reduced licensing rights, smaller user limits, or fewer advanced features than paid editions. In security tools, it often gives organizations basic visibility and control without requiring a full enterprise license.
This matters because many small teams still face real governance and audit problems, especially in cloud services like Microsoft 365. A Community Edition may provide useful defenses such as activity logging, sharing oversight, or access review, helping admins spot risky changes and investigate suspicious behavior. The main tradeoff is scope: free tiers can be limited by user count, retention, automation, or support, so they should be checked carefully before relying on them for full coverage. In attacks, adversaries benefit when defenders assume a free tool is enough; in defense, the edition helps by lowering the barrier to deploying security controls early.
