Communications continuity

The ability to keep trusted coordination channels working during disruption or network separation.

Communications continuity is the ability to keep trusted coordination channels available during disruption, isolation, or network separation. In cyber security, it means operators can still exchange instructions, status updates, alerts, and recovery steps even when primary systems are offline or segmented.

This matters because isolation is only effective if defenders can still manage the environment. In industrial and critical infrastructure settings, a shutdown, breach containment action, or network outage can remove normal email, chat, or control links at the exact moment teams need them most. Good continuity planning maps essential paths in advance, uses separate and trusted channels, and tests them before an incident. Attackers often try to disrupt communications to slow response and create confusion; defenders counter that by preserving redundant, authenticated, and well-practiced coordination routes.
