Command verification

Checks that confirm an instruction is authorized and valid before it is executed.

Command verification is the process of checking that an instruction is both authorized and valid before a system executes it. In practice, this means confirming who sent the command, whether it was signed or authenticated correctly, whether it matches the expected format, and whether it makes sense in the current system state. This is common in spacecraft operations, industrial control, and security-sensitive administration, where a single bad command can cause outages, data loss, or unsafe behavior.

In cyber security, command verification helps stop attackers from turning a stolen account, forged message, or malicious API request into a real action. Defenses include digital signatures, multi-factor authentication, approval workflows, strict allowlists, sequence numbers, and telemetry-based sanity checks. When verification is weak, an attacker may replay, spoof, or alter commands. When it is strong, operators can trust that only legitimate instructions reach critical systems.
