Coding assistant

An AI tool that helps write, review, or modify code inside developer workflows.

A coding assistant is an AI tool that helps developers write, review, explain, or modify source code inside normal engineering workflows. It may live in an IDE, a code review system, or a chat-based development tool, and it can suggest lines, generate functions, refactor files, or answer questions about a repository.

In cyber security, coding assistants matter because they can sit close to sensitive assets: source code, credentials, build scripts, and deployment logic. That makes their permissions, logging, and data retention important. Defenders use them to speed secure coding, spot bugs, and support code review, but they must still verify output, because AI-generated code can introduce vulnerabilities, unsafe dependencies, or leaked secrets. Attackers can also abuse these tools through prompt injection, poisoned code context, or social engineering to push harmful changes. Treating a coding assistant as privileged development infrastructure helps reduce risk.
