Cloud switching

The process of moving data and workloads from one cloud service to another.

Cloud switching is the process of moving data, applications, and workloads from one cloud service to another. It can involve exporting virtual machines, reconfiguring containers, migrating databases, and updating identity, networking, and security controls so the new environment works correctly.

In cyber security, cloud switching matters because it reduces vendor lock-in and improves resilience. If a provider suffers an outage, changes pricing, loses trust, or cannot meet compliance needs, an organization may need to move quickly without losing data integrity or access control. Good defenses make switching easier by using open formats, portable architectures, strong backup and recovery plans, and clear exit clauses in contracts. Poorly designed cloud estates can slow incident response, increase downtime, and expose sensitive data during migration. In practice, cloud switching is both a technical migration task and a security control for continuity.
