Cloud-linked feature

a function that depends on remote services as well as local hardware.

A cloud-linked feature is a function that relies on both the local device and a remote service to work. The hardware may capture data, perform sensing, or trigger an action, while the cloud handles sync, identity, storage, analytics, or remote control. Many modern phones, wearables, and companion apps use this model because it adds convenience and extra capabilities beyond the device itself.

In cyber security, cloud-linked features matter because the trust boundary extends beyond the device. If an attacker steals an account token, abuses weak authentication, or compromises the backend service, they may read synced data, change settings, or impersonate the user even without touching the hardware. Defenders should review which features truly need cloud access, enforce multi-factor authentication, monitor service logs, and disable unnecessary permissions or syncing. Clear update support also matters, since both the app and the remote service must stay secure.
