Cloud canon is the recurring cost of running cloud services as part of normal operations, rather than a one-time purchase. It includes compute, storage, network traffic, managed services, and often the ongoing expenses needed to keep those services secure and available.
In cybersecurity, this matters because cloud environments are not “set and forget.” Logging, patching, backups, configuration review, identity controls, and resilience testing all rely on steady funding. If the cloud canon is underestimated, teams may delay updates, reduce monitoring, or leave exposed assets online longer than intended. Attackers often benefit from exactly that kind of operational drift. Defenders treat cloud costs as part of security planning, using governance, budgeting, and automation to keep platforms patched, observable, and hard to abuse.
