Cloud binding

The linking of a local controller or device to a cloud account for remote management.

Cloud binding is the process of linking a local controller, appliance, or device to a cloud account so it can be managed remotely. In network and IoT platforms, this step often creates the trust relationship that lets the cloud service push settings, collect status, and accept administrative actions from approved users.

It matters because binding is not just a convenience feature; it defines who controls the device fleet. If attackers can abuse the binding workflow, they may redirect management to their own account, enroll unauthorized devices, or interfere with provisioning and configuration integrity. Defenders should treat cloud binding as part of the attack surface: protect the account used for binding, enforce strong authentication, review which devices are linked, and monitor for unexpected changes during onboarding or re-binding. In practice, many management-plane attacks begin by targeting this first trust decision.
