A clone website is a copied or carefully imitated site built to look like a legitimate company, brand, or service. It may reuse logos, layouts, product pages, contact details, and even similar domain names to create a believable web presence.
In cyber security, clone websites matter because they weaponize trust. They are often used in impersonation fraud, phishing, invoice scams, and advance-payment schemes, where a victim checks the site before sending money or sharing sensitive information. A convincing clone can bypass rushed visual checks even when no server is hacked.
Defenders reduce this risk by verifying domains, checking registration details, and confirming payment or banking changes through out-of-band channels. Security teams also monitor for lookalike domains and brand abuse, since early detection can stop fraud before it reaches the payment stage.
