Clock stability

How accurately a radio stays on frequency over time, which is important for reliable reception and transmission.

Clock stability is how closely a radio’s oscillator stays on its intended frequency over time. In an SDR or other wireless device, the clock sets the timing for sampling, modulation, and demodulation. If that clock drifts, the receiver can miss parts of a signal, decode data incorrectly, or lose synchronization with another device.

In cyber security, clock stability matters because many wireless attacks and defenses depend on precise timing and frequency alignment. A stable clock improves reliable reception, protocol analysis, and signal reconstruction during monitoring or incident response. Weak stability can also create opportunities for attackers, since small frequency errors may reduce the effectiveness of detection, interference, or authentication checks that assume clean radio timing. Defenders use better oscillators, calibration, and frequency correction to keep SDR tools accurate and to make wireless systems harder to disrupt or misread.
