Client library

Software used by applications to communicate with an external service, such as a database.

A client library is software that helps an application communicate with an external service, such as a database, message queue, or API. It hides protocol details and provides functions for connecting, sending requests, parsing responses, and handling errors. In database systems, a client library often sits between application code and the server, so it becomes part of the trusted path for every query and command.

Client libraries matter in cybersecurity because flaws in them can affect many applications at once. If a library has a parsing bug, memory-safety issue, or insecure command-building logic, attackers may be able to alter data, trigger code execution, or disrupt service without attacking the server directly. Defenders should inventory all applications that use the library, patch quickly, validate versions, and review transport security settings such as certificate verification. Least-privilege credentials also help limit damage if a client-side flaw is abused.
