Circuit theory

The branch of electrical engineering that studies how components and networks behave under voltage and current.

Circuit theory is the branch of electrical engineering that analyzes how components and networks behave under voltage and current. It uses models such as resistance, capacitance, inductance, impedance, and feedback to predict how a circuit responds at a given bias point or operating condition. The goal is to describe not just single parts, but the behavior of the whole electrical network.

In cyber security, circuit theory matters because many attacks and defenses depend on hardware behavior. Embedded devices, radios, power supplies, and sensors can leak information through power use, timing, or signal shape, and those effects are easiest to understand with circuit analysis. It also helps explain unusual behavior such as negative resistance, where a device or network may appear to respond opposite to the normal voltage-current expectation. Security engineers use circuit theory to design stable systems, spot suspicious oscillations or feedback problems, and test whether a device is vulnerable to fault injection, interference, or hardware tampering.
