Chip shortage

A supply condition where demand for chips exceeds available manufacturing output.

A chip shortage is a supply condition in which demand for semiconductors exceeds available manufacturing output. In practice, this can affect CPUs, GPUs, network devices, secure elements, and other components that power servers, endpoints, and security appliances. When supply is tight, prices rise, lead times stretch, and organizations may have to delay upgrades or buy from less trusted channels.

In cyber security, chip shortages matter because they can change procurement and risk decisions. Defenders may keep older hardware in service longer, increasing exposure to unpatched vulnerabilities or weak encryption support. Attackers can also benefit from strained supply chains by targeting counterfeit parts, broker networks, or rushed purchasing processes. For cloud and AI infrastructure, shortages can concentrate compute in a few providers, making identity controls, tenant isolation, logging, and continuity planning more important. A shortage is not just a logistics problem; it can become an operational and security constraint.
