The chimney effect is a natural airflow pattern where warm air rises through a vertical channel and exits an enclosure, pulling cooler air in behind it. In engineering, this helps fanless systems, sealed appliances, and equipment racks shed heat without active fans. The effect depends on enclosure shape, vent placement, and a clear upward path for convection.
In cyber security, thermal design is part of system reliability. Security appliances, embedded controllers, and industrial devices often run in tight enclosures where heat buildup can cause throttling, instability, or unexpected shutdowns. Defenders use the chimney effect to improve passive cooling and protect availability. Attackers may also exploit poor airflow by stressing hardware until it overheats, making thermal management a resilience issue as much as a performance one.
