A chat log is a stored record of messages exchanged in a chat system, often including prompts, replies, timestamps, and metadata. In security terms, chat logs can be highly sensitive because users may enter credentials, personal data, business information, code, or other confidential details during a conversation. If those logs are retained without strong controls, a compromise can expose far more than the chat service itself.
Chat logs matter in both attacks and defenses. Attackers may target them to harvest secrets, impersonate users, or build convincing phishing messages from private context. Defenders should treat logs as high-value data: encrypt them at rest, restrict access by role, limit how long they are kept, and separate conversation storage from authentication systems. During incident response, teams also check whether logs were merely accessible or actually copied, because that distinction affects impact assessment and notification duties.
