Chassis

The outer case that protects internal hardware components from physical damage.

A chassis is the outer enclosure of a device such as a server, switch, router, or workstation. It holds and shields internal parts like circuit boards, fans, power supplies, and connectors. The chassis is more than a shell: it helps control airflow, provides structural support, and reduces exposure to dust, moisture, and accidental impact.

In cyber security, chassis condition matters because physical damage can create operational and security risks. A cracked or drilled case may expose ports, let an attacker reach internal components, or indicate tampering. Real-world attacks often begin with physical access: an adversary might open a chassis to install a hardware implant, steal storage media, press reset buttons, or bypass seals. Defenders inspect chassis for holes, broken locks, missing screws, and other signs of manipulation, then use locked racks and tamper-evident controls to protect equipment.
