Capacity reservation is a cloud control that sets aside compute resources in advance, often in a specific region, zone, or instance family. It lowers the risk that a workload will fail to start or scale when demand spikes or scarce hardware is in short supply. Unlike a simple spending commitment, it is about availability first.
In cyber security, capacity reservations help keep critical systems online, including detection pipelines, incident-response tooling, and AI jobs that need GPUs or other accelerators. They are useful when a provider is tight on capacity or when a team must guarantee room for a launch, migration, or surge test. The tradeoff is flexibility: a reservation can tie you to a location or machine type, so teams still need fallback plans, data-placement checks, and cost control. Defenders use reservations to protect continuity; attackers benefit when scarce capacity prevents a workload from running on schedule.
