c-toxcore

The reference implementation of the Tox protocol, used by Tox-compatible clients.

c-toxcore is the C reference implementation of the Tox protocol, a distributed, encrypted messaging system. Developers use it to build Tox-compatible clients and libraries that can exchange messages and media peer to peer, without relying on a central server.

In cyber security, c-toxcore matters because attackers can embed it to create resilient command-and-control channels. A Tox-based implant can be harder to disrupt with simple domain or IP blocking, since communication is spread across peers instead of a single fixed server. Defenders may look for unusual use of the library, encrypted outbound traffic that does not match normal applications, and suspicious process behavior around networking or script execution. On the defensive side, understanding c-toxcore helps analysts recognize when a legitimate decentralized messaging component is being abused inside malware.
