Business-impact analysis (BIA) is the process of identifying which business functions are most critical, how long they can be unavailable, and what dependencies they need to recover. It helps an organization set recovery priorities, define acceptable downtime, and estimate the operational and financial effect of disruption.
In cyber security, BIA is a core resilience tool. It tells defenders which services need the fastest restoration after ransomware, cloud outages, identity failures, or infrastructure loss. It also helps size backups, failover paths, and incident response plans around real business needs instead of guesswork. In practice, a good BIA maps systems to processes, ranks them by importance, and links each one to recovery time and recovery point targets. Without it, teams may protect low-value assets first while leaving critical services exposed.
