BSON

A binary-encoded serialization format used to store and exchange documents in MongoDB.

BSON, or Binary JSON, is MongoDB’s binary serialization format for documents. It stores the same kind of structured data as JSON, but in a compact, type-aware form that is faster for machines to parse and exchange. Because BSON preserves explicit data types, it is central to how MongoDB drivers, servers, and tools move records across the network and between application layers.

In cyber security, BSON matters because attacker-controlled input often reaches BSON parsers through APIs, drivers, or embedded database features. If a parser mishandles malformed or oversized BSON, the result can be a crash, memory corruption, or denial of service. Security bugs may also appear in related code paths such as document validation, encryption workflows, or file storage helpers that rely on BSON encoding and decoding. Defenders reduce this risk by patching database drivers, validating inputs, fuzz-testing serialization code, and monitoring applications for crashes or unusual 5xx errors.
