Branch-specific fix

A patch released for a particular software line or version family.

A branch-specific fix is a patch that applies only to one software line or version family, rather than to every release. Vendors use branches when a product has multiple supported tracks, such as different major versions or long-term support builds. A fix may be backported to an older branch or shipped only for the active one, so the exact installed version matters.

In cyber security, branch-specific fixes are important because applying the wrong update can leave a system unpatched or even break compatibility. Attackers often target this gap: organizations know a product was patched, but their branch was not among the fixed builds. Defenders should inventory versions precisely, match each device to the correct advisory, and verify that the final installed build belongs to the right branch. This is common for appliances, enterprise software, and operating systems where maintenance windows and support lifecycles differ across versions.
