Bot account

An automated or semi-automated social profile used to simulate human activity or amplify messages.

A bot account is an automated or semi-automated social profile designed to imitate human behavior online. It may post, like, follow, reply, or share content on a schedule, often using scripts, platform APIs, or operator-controlled tools. In influence operations, bot accounts can amplify a message, create the illusion of popularity, or flood conversations to shape what users see.

Bot accounts matter in cyber security because they are a common part of coordinated inauthentic behavior, spam, phishing, scams, and reputation attacks. Defenders look for signs such as synchronized posting times, repeated wording across many profiles, unusual follower or network patterns, shared infrastructure, and rapid account creation. Good controls include rate limiting, behavior analytics, bot detection, stronger account verification, and rapid takedown workflows. The key risk is scale: a small operator can use many accounts to make manipulation look organic.
