Boot prompt

The first command interface a system presents after powering on.

A boot prompt is the first command interface a system shows after power-on. It may be a firmware console, a recovery shell, or an embedded language prompt such as BASIC on older machines. At this stage, the device has not yet loaded a full operating system, so the prompt often provides direct control over startup options, diagnostics, and recovery actions.

In cyber security, the boot prompt matters because it sits close to the trust boundary. If an attacker can reach it, they may change boot settings, disable protections, load unapproved code, or extract data before the OS security stack is active. Defenders protect this layer with BIOS/UEFI passwords, secure boot, locked-down recovery modes, and physical access controls. A boot prompt can also help incident response by giving administrators a minimal environment for repair, inspection, and safe recovery when the normal system will not start.
