Black-box reimplementation

Building software by studying observable behavior rather than reading the source code.

Black-box reimplementation means building new software by observing how an existing program behaves, rather than examining its source code. Developers provide inputs, inspect outputs, and write independent code to reproduce selected functions. This differs from methods such as decompilation, which analyze compiled code.

In cyber security, reimplementation can support interoperability, compatibility testing, and replacement tools, but matching behavior does not establish that software is safe or legally compliant. Attackers can also imitate a trusted tool’s visible behavior, so users should verify software sources, updates, dependencies, and data handling before use. Security review should focus on what the program actually does, not simply how it was built.
