Biofabrication

Making materials with biological systems instead of only traditional industrial methods.

Biofabrication is the production of materials or structures using biological systems such as cells, fungi, bacteria, or engineered tissues instead of only traditional industrial processes. In practice, it can involve growing fibers, films, scaffolds, or composites under controlled biological conditions, often with digital design and automated lab equipment.

In cyber security, biofabrication matters because it is a cyber-physical process: software, sensors, recipes, and networked instruments directly affect what gets made. Attackers may target design files, process parameters, or lab automation to alter outputs, steal intellectual property, or disrupt production. Defenders focus on access control, network segmentation, signed workflows, audit logs, and integrity checks so that biological manufacturing remains safe, repeatable, and trustworthy.
