Benchmark harness

The controlled environment and rules used to evaluate a system’s performance.

A benchmark harness is the controlled environment, input set, scoring logic, and operating rules used to test a system under repeatable conditions. In cyber security, it defines what an AI agent, scanner, or exploit tool is allowed to see and do, and how success is measured. The harness matters because small changes in permissions, data, or scoring can produce very different results.

For defenders, a benchmark harness helps compare tools fairly and safely, such as measuring whether an agent can reproduce a vulnerability, detect malicious behavior, or generate a working proof-of-concept without touching real systems. For attackers, the same idea can be used in training rigs to tune techniques before real use. In practice, benchmark results should always be read in the context of the harness: strong performance in a restricted test does not automatically mean safe, reliable, or fully autonomous behavior in the wild.
