Bench servicing

Repair work done at a workbench with tools, testing, and direct access to the device.

Bench servicing is repair or inspection work performed at a workbench, where the technician has direct access to the device and can use tools, probes, and test equipment. Unlike remote troubleshooting, bench work lets you open the hardware, measure components, swap parts, and verify behavior step by step.

In cyber security, bench servicing matters because physical access changes the threat model. It is how defenders recover data from damaged systems, inspect suspicious hardware, extract firmware, or image storage offline without risking the live environment. It also appears in attacks: an adversary with bench access may implant a hardware backdoor, alter boot media, reset protections, or pull secrets from chips and drives. Careful bench servicing supports chain of custody, repeatable diagnosis, and evidence preservation, making it useful in forensics as well as maintenance.
