Baud rate

The speed of serial communication, measured in signal changes per second.

Baud rate is the signaling speed of a serial connection, measured in signal changes per second. In many simple links, it is treated as the data rate, so a 9600 baud connection is a low-bandwidth channel that can only move information in small, predictable bursts. In practice, both ends of the link must agree on the same rate; if they do not, bytes can be misread, dropped, or corrupted.

In cyber security, baud rate matters because serial links often carry sensitive control data in industrial devices, embedded systems, consoles, and lab equipment. Attackers may abuse mismatched settings, noisy links, or timing assumptions to cause denial of service, desynchronization, or parser failures. Defenders use the right baud settings, strict framing, and robust error handling to keep serial traffic reliable. When modern data is pushed through legacy hardware, the baud rate becomes part of the trust boundary: it limits throughput, but it also exposes where communication can break.
