Bare Repository

A server-side Git repository without a working tree, commonly used for hosting code.

A bare repository is a Git repository stored without a working tree. It contains the repository data, branches, tags, and metadata, but no checked-out files on disk. This format is common on servers that host shared code, because clients clone from it and push changes back to it.

In cyber security, bare repositories matter because they sit close to the trust boundary of developer infrastructure. Server-side Git features such as hooks, patch handling, and write permissions can become dangerous if attacker-controlled content is processed as trusted input. When defenders review a compromise, a bare repository may be a place to look for unauthorized pushes, suspicious hook files, or abuse of repository automation. Protecting these repositories means limiting write access, monitoring changes, and patching hosting platforms quickly.
