Banking desertification

the gradual loss of local banking presence in a territory.

Banking desertification is the gradual loss of local banking presence in a territory: branches close, service points shrink, and people are pushed toward distant or fully digital channels. In cyber security, this matters because the weaker the local footprint, the more customers must rely on remote support, mobile apps, and contact centers. That increases exposure to phishing, social engineering, fraudulent “help desk” calls, and account takeover attempts that target users who cannot easily verify requests in person.

Defenders treat banking desertification as both an access problem and a security problem. Banks may deploy hybrid counters, secure remote assistance, stronger identity checks, and fraud monitoring to preserve trust while reducing travel and exclusion. The risk is not that digital banking is unsafe by default; it is that losing local access can make verification harder and scams more convincing. In practice, the best defenses keep a trusted local touchpoint while hardening remote channels against impersonation and abuse.
