Background processing

app activity that continues even when the app is not in the foreground.

Background processing is app activity that continues after the app is no longer in the foreground. On mobile devices, this can include playing audio, syncing data, sending notifications, recording sensor input, or finishing a task that was started before the user switched away. It is useful because it lets software act continuously without forcing the user to keep the screen open.

In cyber security, background processing matters because it changes how visible an app’s behavior is. Legitimate apps and security tools use it for updates, backups, and monitoring, but attackers can abuse it to keep malicious actions running quietly, such as collecting data, maintaining persistence, or delaying suspicious network calls. Defenders watch for unexpected background services, abnormal battery use, and permission abuse, since these can reveal hidden activity even when an app appears idle.
