Backend services are the server-side systems that receive requests from an app, process them, and decide whether the request is allowed. They often handle authentication, authorization, data storage, device state, and business logic. In practice, the backend is the part of an application that users do not see, but it is usually the final authority for sensitive actions.
In cyber security, backend services matter because trust in the client is never enough. Mobile apps, web apps, and devices can be copied, inspected, or modified, so any security decision left only to the client can be bypassed. Attackers often look for hidden API endpoints, weak access checks, hardcoded secrets, or missing server-side validation to reach functions they should not control. Defenders reduce this risk by enforcing authentication and authorization on every request, validating input on the server, rotating exposed credentials, and logging suspicious activity. In systems that control physical access, weak backend protections can turn a software flaw into a real-world security problem.
