Azure consumption is the amount of Microsoft Azure services and resources an organization uses, such as virtual machines, storage, databases, bandwidth, and managed platform features. It is usually measured through billing, usage metrics, and subscription activity.
This matters in cyber security because higher consumption expands the attack surface and the cost footprint at the same time. More subscriptions, identities, workloads, and configuration options create more places for misconfigurations, excessive permissions, and policy drift. Security teams track consumption to enforce budgets, rightsize workloads, and keep logging, backup, and access controls in place. In real attacks, compromised accounts can be used to spin up resources for cryptomining, data staging, or persistence, causing unusual consumption spikes. In defense, monitoring Azure consumption helps detect abuse early and shows whether growth is happening under governance or through uncontrolled sprawl.
